Avatar The Way of Water | Virtual Pandoran Ocean Creature Creator

The Virtual Pandoran Ocean Creature Creator is a digital experience created for the release of Avatar the Way of Water, celebrating the wondrous creatures of Pandora while helping endangered wildlife here on Earth. Through partnerships with filmmakers, Disney’s Nature Conservancy, and the Keep Our Oceans Amazing campaign, we created a one-of-a-kind digital experience that encapsulates education, creativity, and exploration in an immersive virtual ‘fishtank’ for use at marketing events and in homes around the world.

This experience first premiered at the D23 Expo, the Official Disney Fan convention, where guests created over 5,000 creatures, each triggering a donation to save endangered ocean species. Guests created their own Avatar-inspired creature on an iPad and watched their uniquely designed 3D creature come to life and swim around the Virtual Pandoran Ocean on a giant display. 

This activation was then extended globally with localized versions in the U.S., Japan, Spain, Australia, Brazil, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Korea and Indonesia. What was originally designed to exist on a self-contained app space on iPads, had to be resized and formatted to work on browsers on any device type or size, internationally. Translations and legal issues were solved in order to bring this experience into the hands of as many users as possible.

Ultimately, this campaign raised over $850,000 to help ten specific endangered ocean creatures, inspired by James Cameron’s passion for nature conservation and marine life, and of course, Avatar the Way of Water.
